“Socio‐ecological assessment of urban landscapes: a comparative study”
Politecnico di Torino ‐ National University of Singapore

Urban landscape is a concept difficult to define, a challenge for several disciplines, but it has gained a role in public policies, so calling for a specific definition of technical activities. The course will deal with theoretical issues, related to the definition of urban landscape, with recent dynamics affecting the European cities, and with the role of urban parks and open spaces.
Managing the urban scene is the first focus: concepts, theories, approaches will be discussed, emerging practices and methodologies for analysing, planning and managing the urban scene, including the use of GIS techniques will be proposed.
The second part of the course deals with the socioecological assessment of urban landscapes, and focuses on the role of urban parks and open spaces. Two case studies are analysed: Torino and Singapore, within the scope of the Joint Project for the Internationalization of Research “Socio‐ecological assessment of urban landscapes: a comparative study” Politecnico di Torino ‐ National University of Singapore.

The Joint Project for the Internationalization of Research (principal investigator: prof. B.M. Rinaldi, Politecnico di Torino and Puay Yok Tan, National University of Singapore) is sponsored by the Politecnico di Torino with the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo.
