Abstract

Combining expertise across all facets of transport and analytical tools, WE-TRANSFORM aims to apply a participatory approach, using Collective Intelligence (CI), to generate an evidence-based and action-oriented agenda to research, formulate and prioritize the challenges connected to the effects of automation on the transport labour force, on future working conditions and on skills requirements. The WE-TRANSFORM consortium, leveraging existing data and people’s expertise, and empowered by the range and depth of its composition, will create a system of thematic and modal crossnational living hub as a knowledge & prioritization agenda-creation platform, offering a path forward for smarter decisions, more innovative and evidence-based policymaking, through informed governance. The approach of WE-TRANSFORM is highly collaborative, promoting discovery, debate and prioritization of themes by the active participation of representative types of stakeholders, using state-of-the-art data collection and analysis tools while drawing information and themes for the collectively constructed agenda from wide-ranging environments. The composition of the consortium and the Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to be used guarantee access and involvement across a wide range of relevant parties ranging from transport-chains’ stakeholders and extending to citizens’ associations and beyond including information mining from electronic social media. Robust analytical tools are combined with information findings drawn at AI speed and coverage potential, while the simulation of a social debate within a living hub environment allows the dialogue and ultimately the formulation of a collectively defined agenda enriched with co-created knowledge. The proposal includes also a final provision for maintaining the electronic environment created in a sustainable way as to serve for future research in the area.

OPTICITIES-OPTIMIZE CITIZENS MOBILITY AND FREIGHT MANAGEMENT IN URBAN TRANSPORT, (2013-2016) - Responsabile Scientifico

Ricerca UE (non commerciale). Progetti di Ricerca Europei

See project record on CORDIS

Abstract

OPTICITIES’ vision is to help European cities tackle complex mobility challenges. OPTICITIES’ strategy focuses on the optimisation of transport networks through the development of public/private partnerships and the experimentation of innovative ITS services.OPTICITIES addresses both passenger and freight transport issues supporting a user-centred approach.OPTICITIES delivers significant innovation breakthroughs:- New governance scheme between public and private stakeholders through a contractual architecture fostering data quality and implementing data access policy;- European standard for urban multimodal data set including interfaces with information services;- Decision support tools based on predictive data for proactive transport management and Multimodal Traffic Control Systems connecting road traffic and public transport data in cities;- Multimodal real-time urban navigator interfaced with in-car navigation systems as a first world trial;- Urban freight navigator to support drivers and fleet operators in optimising their deliveries. The European dimension of the project is ensured by a consortium of 25 partners from 8 EU member states. The consortium includes 6 city authorities, major ITS actors (research institutes, information service providers, car industry) and the most important networks of European cities and international public transport operators.Led by public authorities the consortium supports 3 key approaches: effectiveness of solutions ensuring deployment perspectives of maximum 5 years; scalability of services tailored to diverse European urban typologies; transferability of results to foster further deployments in other European cities.OPTICITIES’ main expected impacts are:- 6% modal shift inducing a yearly gain of 1.5 MT of CO2- Increase in market size (211 M€ per year) thanks to the new governance scheme and implementation of innovative services- 10% decrease in private car use generating a gain of 3.6 M m2 of public space

DETRA - DEVELOPING A EUROPEAN TRANSPORT RESEARCH ALLIANCE, (2010-2012) - Responsabile Scientifico

Abstract

The concept of DETRA derives from the so-called Lyon Declaration. In 2008, the Lyon Declaration signatories i.e ECTRI, FERSI, FEHRL, EURNEX, HUMANIST, ISN and NEARCTIS committed themselves to work together on the deepening the European Research Area objectives in transport in order to address the Grand Challenges. From this commitment grew the objective to create a European Transport Research Alliance (ETRA) that would strengthen transport domain. Key priorities of this Alliance were to examine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) in the domain and develop common understanding and approaches to reducing fragmentation and overcoming barriers.

YEAR2010 - YOUNG EUROPEAN ARENA OF RESEARCH 2010, (2009-2010) - Responsabile Scientifico

Ricerca UE (non commerciale). Progetti di Ricerca Europei

See project record on CORDIS

Abstract

This is a proposal for an early-stage research student competition – a kind of Transport Research ‘Olympics’ – to complement the goals of the Transport Research Arena conference, TRA, in Brussels in 2010. The goal is to stimulate interest among young researchers in the conference and contribute to establishing it as the premier Transport event in the world. This activity will directly support the TRA event and reinforce its profile as a major European and internationally important conference. At the same time it will strengthen European research in surface transport by promoting collaboration and inter-disciplinarity and be recognising and rewarding excellence. The YEAR competition will be in two stages. In the first stage, up to about 600 students will submit abstracts, clearly specifying the deliverables and practical outputs of their research. There will be a network of about 80 judges, experts in surface transporation research, to encourage a wide participation from all over Europe. The abstracts will be hosted on a website which will constitute a showcase of early stage research in Europe. There will be about 6 categories, four for research which tracks, as far as possible, the core areas of the TRA conference a fifth ‘future vision’ category and a sixth 'inter-disciplinary' category which promotes the linking of pure science, socio-economics and applied science. In the second stage, about 50 finalists will be brought to the TRA-2010 conference to present their work in the form of posters and other displays. There will be gold, silver and bronze medals for each of the 6 categories and winners will be featured prominently at the conference to stimulate interest among delegates, journalists and the general public. The exhibition will be in a prominent area to encourage a wide ranging discussion between students and delegates who constitute future potential employers and stakeholders in road transport.
