Biography

Has conducted researches in the fields of modern and contemporary architecture and city planning, and the results of his studies have formed the object of publications, speeches and reports at national and international conferences. Based on the belief that the history of contemporary architecture continues to be exceedingly centred on the great protagonists of the Modern Movement and their works and fails to look closely enough into the really significant elements that have shaped the structure of the land and the city in the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, he focused his research work on themes that are overlooked by mainstream historiography. In particular, by identifying architects and engineers who are not widely known but are the authors of a diversified range of works, and by studying cultural areas that have come only recently to the attention of critics (e.g., “Traditionalism”), he has described, also through methodological approaches of a quantitative nature, some aspects of the evolution of architecture and the transformation of modern cities which had long remained in the shadow. Among these studies we should mention in particular those concerning the projects and works by Giuseppe Momo (1875-1940), Sergio J. Hutter (1926-1999) and Amedeo Albertini (1916-1982) architects who have been largely ignored by critics, though they produced many works, were mindful of the rules of “good building” and aware of the social implications of architecture. In these investigations, Montanari addressed the role played by architecture in the fascist period and the post-war years – from the reconstruction period to the crisis of heavy industry as a driving force – and developed an approach that is able to bring to the fore new facets in the history of architectural debate, education, and organisation, and to suggest new lines of investigation. He is teaching history of contemporary architecture and he is member of CDA of the Turin Polytechnic.
