Comparing US and EU Approaches to Planning for Urban Resilience

Castello del Valentino, Torino

Instructors Workshop

Ombretta Caldarice
Sara Meerow

Faced with climate change, global pandemics, and other shocks and stresses, cities across EU and US are increasingly focused on planning for resilience, or the capacity to cope with change and disruption. Despite similarities and connections, urban governance related to urban resilience planning is very different across the EU and US.
This Workshop will introduce master students to key similarities and differences in how cities are planning for resilience across these two regions. The Workshop will provide a basic introduction to general planning structures and processes in the EU and US, as well as more specifics about resilience planning, including hazards/disaster risk reduction and climate change planning. Master students will have the opportunity to apply the concepts learned in class to realworld cities through a city comparison report.

Workshop reserved for students in the
Master's Degree Program in Territorial, Urban, Environmental and Landscape Planning
