LECTURE
A Story Map of Diverse History and Complex Data
Preserving Significant Places of Black History

Bilge Kose

ABSTRACT
LPC's designation reports are regulatory documents outlining significance and guidance for regulation. While they expand our understanding of history, they don't necessarily connect stories between all related designations across New York City or particular aspects of its history. Doing additional research on the interconnectedness of NYC's historic landmarks allows a fuller story and makes NYC's diverse history more accessible. ArcGIS Story Maps provides the necessary tools for LPC, aiming to share public stories of NYC through designated landmarks and historic districts in an interactive and highly visual way. In this presentation, Landmarks Preservationist Dr. Bilge Kose will share the process of creating this story map out of complex data and diverse history.

Bilge Kose is a Landmarks Preservationist at the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University, Historic Preservation Program, teaching Digital Heritage Documentation: GIS, Building Surveying and Data Management. She is a historic preservationist, designer, and interior architect. She has a Ph.D. degree from the Graduate Program of Conservation of Cultural Heritage at Middle East Technical University (METU).
