ACTIVE TRANSPORT MODAL SHIFTS IN A CAR DEPENDENT WORLD
This seminar considers policy attempts to increase shifts towards active transportation modes in Australian cities. Australia is often considered as one of the world’s most urbanised countries. However, such statements conceal the suburban nature of Australia’s urban form, where much of its city development has been designed entirely around private motor car travel.
This seminar will present the approaches used in active transportation planning in Australia, and its underwhelming results. The seminar will highlight the dependence of policy on politics, and how once set, urban form establishes behaviours that are highly resilient to change. The seminar will invite audience participation to consider how European approaches to active transportation policy assist in tackling one of Australia’s most difficult planning challenges.
