Special Session 29: Water Futures - Securing Water Futures: Resilient City-Regions through Innovative Planning and Integrated Governance
Convenors:
Patrícia Abrantes (Universidade de Lisboa)
Lina Suleiman (KTH Royal Institute of Technology)
Elisabetta Vitale Brovarone (Politecnico di Torino)
Amid intensifying droughts, floods, and hydrological stress driven by climate change and urbanization, governance and planning must move beyond sectoral silos toward systemic, spatially integrated approaches. This session explores how city-regions can anticipate and secure resilient water futures through innovative, climate-adaptive, and socially inclusive planning strategies.
We invite global contributions that advance conceptual, empirical, or methodological insights on:
- Integrated governance frameworks across sectors (water, land, climate, housing, energy, food) and scales (local to regional)
- Regional strategies for circular and nature-based water infrastructure
- Intermunicipal and transboundary cooperation for managing shared water risks and resources in metropolitan and peri-urban areas
- Inclusive and adaptive and data-informed planning instruments
