MANAGING THE IVREA WORLD HERITAGE SITE

The session will feature Erica Meneghin, architect and PhD in Architectural and Landscape Heritage, who serves as Programme Manager of the Heritage Area at Fondazione Santagata for the Economy of Culture. Fondazione Santagata, a Foundation in Official Relations with UNESCO, which operates internationally to advance heritage-based sustainable development through applied research, capacity building, policy support, and technical consulting for cultural and natural heritage governance.
Drawing on its multidisciplinary expertise, the Foundation supports public institutions, cultural organisations, and UNESCO sites in developing management tools, strategic plans, heritage impact assessments, and community-oriented approaches that link conservation with innovation and local development.

Erica Meneghin’s contribution will offer students first-hand insights into how these principles are applied in practice, focusing on the UNESCO site “Ivrea, Industrial City of the 20th Century.” Her presentation will highlight how the ongoing update of the site’s Management Plan seeks to integrate heritage conservation with contemporary urban dynamics, community engagement, and long-term sustainability goals.
The Management Plan of the Ivrea Industrial City of the 20th Century World Heritage Site represents a comprehensive framework for safeguarding, understanding, and enhancing the outstanding universal value of a unique urban and architectural ensemble shaped by Olivetti’s industrial and social vision.
Building on the principles of integrated conservation and participatory governance, the Plan combines protection and planning tools with strategies for knowledge dissemination, community engagement, and sustainable local development.

This presentation will outline the methodological approach adopted for the 2025–2030 update of the Management Plan, illustrating how the dialogue between heritage conservation, contemporary urban dynamics, and innovation processes informs the site’s long-term vision."
