Experiments to Free the House from the “Family”
Research Dialogue with Akihito Aoi - Architectural History and Theory - Meiji University, Tokyo
ABSTRACT
Throughout history, houses have accommodated changing forms of family and social life. Modernity, however, created a strong bond between the home and the nuclear family, a model whose fragility is increasingly evident in growing social isolation. Rather than returning to traditional communities, can we learn to combine different systems—family, neighbourhood, market and public services—rather than depending too heavily on any one of them?
Through the experiment of Jia Jia House in Tokyo, the talk will explores this alternative house: an open and evolving community space of family, neighbourhood, market and public services. An open discussion around the topic of contemporary and collective housing in Japan and Europe with a dialogue between architectural and planning community connecting methods and case studies.

Speaker Biography
Akihito Aoi is one of Japan’s leading architectural historians and theorists, and Full Professor of Architectural History and Theory at Meiji University, Tokyo. While modern architectural history remains at the core of his research, his approach departs from conventional art-historical accounts of Japanese styles, ideas and movements. His work explores architecture through such themes as nation-states and religious communities, everyday life and political movements, geographical territories and disasters, and the physical movement and relocation of houses and even entire cities. More recently, connecting the history of architecture with questions of family and community, he and his wife have been running their own home, nicknamed Jia Jia House, as a collaborative platform for community-building with their neighbours.
