Mombasa Old Town: History, Architecture and Conservation. By Prof. Kalandar Kamalkhan

For centuries a melting pot of Swahili, Arab, Asian, Portuguese and British culture, the architecture of Mombasa old town reflects the diversity and complexity of its past. In the last decades, an important programme aimed at preserving the architectural heritage of the old city has been conducted at the behest of the Kenyan government, especially through the National Museums of Kenya. The talk will focus on the history of Mombasa old town, its architecture, and reflect on the current legislative and practical efforts to preserve the city’s heritage in a challenging context of accelerated urban development.
